Nearly five miles of paved and wood chip hiking trails wind their way through the Arboretum and across two 75-foot bridges that span Wolf Creek. A major tributary of the Blue River, Wolf Creek bisects the Arboretum.

Trails become more challenging along the limestone bluffs, which rise high above its southern banks. A detailed trail map is available at the Environmental Education Visitors Center.

For those less adventuresome, a half-mile asphalt "country road" trail is available for an easy saunter. Sidewalks extend from the parking area into all gardens and meet ADA standards for accessibility.

Hiking & Biking in the KC Metro area

The MetroGreen Plan

MetroGreen is a proposed 1,144-mile interconnected system of public and private open spaces, greenways and trails designed to link seven counties in the Kansas City metropolitan area. The plan covers Leavenworth, Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas and Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri.

Since its inception in the 1990s, MetroGreen has served as a guide for metropolitan greenway development. Many local communities have developed local plans and constructed trail segments consistent with this regional vision concept. The MetroGreen initiative is the catalyst for completing a Kansas City Metropolitan area greenway system.

For more information on the Plan and to view an interactive map of the MetroGreen trail system, visit the Mid-America Regional Council site or call (816) 474-4240.
